Do only "crazy" people come to counseling?
No! Let’s get this misconception out of the way right now: needing or seeking counseling is a sign of strength, self-awareness, and a proactive approach to well-being, not a sign of being “crazy.”
In reality, people from all walks of life, with diverse backgrounds and concerns, choose to come to counseling. They are often intelligent, capable individuals who navigate life’s complexities, seek to grow, or face specific challenges.
So, about that couch – Do I have to lie down and spill all my secrets like in the movies? (And can I bring snacks?)
Ah, the infamous therapy couch! It’s a classic image thanks to Hollywood and a certain famous psychoanalyst. But here’s the hilarious truth: while I have a couch with pillows and blankets, you do not have to lie down and spill all your secrets.
Think less “mysterious velvet chaise lounge” and more “cozy, supportive environment.” My goal is to create a relaxed and safe space where you feel at ease, not like you’re performing for an audience (or about to take an impromptu nap, though we get it if you’re tired!).
So, no, you do not have to lie down. You can sit however you feel most comfortable – upright, leaning back, or even perched on the edge of your seat if that helps you think! We’re all about meeting you where you are, literally and figuratively.
As for snacks, while we love a good snack break as much as the next person, we generally keep the session focused on you and your insights. I offer drinks, and I usually have chocolate of some sort to share.
But hey, if you need to bring something, consider this your judgment-free zone. Just try to resist the urge to order a pizza mid-session – that might be pushing our professional boundaries just a tad! 😉
